Start Seeing Diversity

The journey on “Start Seeing Diversity” (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011) has been very insightful and educative. Through weekly reflections, I have learned a whole lot about my own biases and isms, and I am ready to utilize critical pedagogy in my professional life.  Anti-Bias education is what our society needs in the 21st Century. Getting out of the comfort zones of our minds and beliefs, we can become open to the differences around us.  We can learn to challenge stereotypes, prejudices, and discriminatory practices among us; in our neighborhoods and the society at large. Above all, the focus should be on children who find themselves in different circumstances that they cannot control (Harro, 2008). As educator we need to value them, respect, and empower them so that they would be liberated from the many demeaning  isms in our society (Harro, 2008). Our goal should be to celebrate every child in our class, their abilities, family, similarities, and differences and develop positive attitudes towards all (Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010).
Here is a collage of "Start Seeing Diversity"

We come in different shades and colors

Valuing one another is crucial

Each  family is Unique

Each child is unique

Variety is the spice of life

If we embrace diversity we would appreciate each other and take action against injustice anywhere in the world.

Be it a blended family Love is the key

We need to Say  No to Racism, Ableism, Ageism, religionism, heterosexism, Sexism, and embrace everyone in the society

when two elephants fight the grass suffers"In the midst of controversies the children should be our focus.

Hi Mary,

I really enjoyed the pictures that you posted. You found quite an array of diverse art. I especially like the diversity poem that used the letters in the word diversity to make each line/word. I agree that we need to start seeing and celebrating our diversity.

Mary,
I also chose the picture of the world along with a poem. I really like your letter of diversity picture along with the all the other pictures. They were definitely a realm of each subject matter we have touched on over the last 7 weeks. Excellent reflection of diversity and culture. Our world is going to be a much better place because of your understanding of social justice.

Mary,

I think you hit on a crucial point when you said we need to get out of our comfort zones and open our minds to new perspectives. I liked the collage, as well. "The grass suffers when 2 elephants fight" I had not heard that before but isn't it true that it is the children who often feel the fallout of adult biases. Thank you, Mary!

Hi Mary,
What a beautiful collage that you made! I think this is a gorgeous representation of diversity. It was very inspiring! I agree with you that our society needs anti-bias education. What a different world it would be if we celebrated and loved each other for who we are instead of putting up walls and barriers because of differences!
Great job!
